Why everyone remembers a seahorse emoji
The seahorse is a well-known example of a false memory in emoji: a large number of people are confident they have seen and used one, and often picture it as a yellow or teal curled seahorse. The standard set has never included it. We checked every one of the 3,963 fully qualified sequences in the Unicode Emoji 18.0 data behind this site, and no character is named seahorse.
The question spread widely in 2025 when people began asking chatbots for the seahorse emoji and sharing the confused answers. A chatbot that “knows” one should exist can end up producing 🐠, 🐴 or 🐉 instead, which reinforces the myth. Apps and keyboards may offer a seahorse sticker or a custom image, but that is not a Unicode emoji and will not paste as text.

How to say “seahorse” with emoji anyway

Will there ever be a seahorse emoji?
Unicode adds new emoji through a public proposal process. As of the Emoji 18.0 data used here there is no seahorse, and no accepted proposal is reflected in that data. This page will be updated if that changes.
Why does my keyboard show a seahorse?
It is a sticker, a custom emoji or a third-party keyboard image. Those are pictures, not Unicode characters, and they cannot be copied as text.
Is 🐉 or 🦎 a good substitute?
