Four levels of angry
Whether you search for the angry emoji or the mad emoji, you are choosing from the same four faces. 😠 (angry face) is displeased but controlled. 😡 (enraged face, often called the pouting face) is red and furious. 😤 (face with steam from nose) is frustration or a defiant “hmph!”; in its original Japanese context it also meant triumph, and people still use it for “nailed it”. 🤬 (face with symbols on mouth) is swearing, the strongest of the set.
In real conversations angry emoji are used more for exaggeration than for actual conflict. “My train is cancelled again 😡” is venting, not a threat. When you are genuinely upset with the person you are messaging, an emoji tends to make it worse; plain words work better.

Venting versus confronting
- Venting about a situation (weather, delays, a referee): any of the four is fine and reads as humour.
- Teasing a friend: 😤 or 😠 with a joke; avoid 🤬.
- Real disagreement: write it out. Add nothing, or at most 😔.
- Playful competitiveness: 😤 (“rematch. now. 😤”) is common and friendly.
