Three ticks, three different characters

✅ (check mark button) is the one most people want: a white tick in a green box that reads as done, correct or confirmed at a glance. ✔️ (check mark) is the plain tick, a text symbol that most platforms draw in black or dark grey even with emoji presentation. ☑️ (check box with check) is a ticked box, the natural choice for lists and forms.

Their opposites are ❌ (cross mark) and ❎ (cross mark button), covered with the religious crosses in the cross emoji guide. If you want a tick with no emoji styling at all, the plain text character ✓ (U+2713) and its heavier sibling ✔ without the selector exist in most fonts, but they are not emoji and will not turn green.
