What the thumbs up emoji means
👍 is the closest thing emoji has to a universal “yes”. In most chats it means approved, agreed, done or simply message received. It is one of the original emoji (Unicode name: thumbs up) and it is the default reaction in many apps, from Slack and Teams to iMessage Tapbacks, which is why it often lands without any words around it.
Its tone depends almost entirely on the relationship. Between colleagues it is efficient and neutral. Between friends, a bare 👍 with no text can feel clipped, and younger users in particular sometimes read a lone thumbs up as passive-aggressive or dismissive. Skin tone versions and how they work
The thumbs up supports all five Fitzpatrick-based skin tone modifiers. Each version is the base character followed by a modifier code point (U+1F3FB to U+1F3FF), so 👍🏽 is really two code points that your keyboard shows as one glyph. Choose the tone you use for yourself and keep it consistent; switching tones to match the person you are replying to is generally read as odd. The yellow default is always acceptable and is the most common choice in group chats and work tools.

Questions people ask
Is the thumbs up emoji rude?
Not by itself. It becomes a problem when it replaces a reply that deserved words, or when it is the only response to something emotional. In work chat it is normal shorthand for “acknowledged”.
Why does 👍 look different on my friend’s phone?
Each platform draws its own artwork. You copy the Unicode character; the receiving device decides how the hand looks. Twemoji, Apple, Google and Microsoft designs all differ slightly.
Does the thumbs up count as one character?
The yellow version is one code point (U+1F44D). The skin tone versions are two code points, which some character-counting tools count as two.
