Not every smiley is friendly
“Smile emoji”, “happy emoji” and “smiley face emoji” all point at the same small family, but the faces are not interchangeable. 😊 (smiling face with smiling eyes) is the warm one: blushing cheeks, closed eyes, genuinely pleased. 😀 (grinning face) and 😄 (grinning face with smiling eyes) are open-mouthed and cheerful. 😁 (beaming face with smiling eyes) shows the teeth and reads as excited or slightly cheeky.
🙂 (slightly smiling face) is the odd one out. Its small, closed smile is technically pleasant, but many people use it to signal restraint or passive-aggression (“okay 🙂”). If you want to sound happy, 😊 is safer. ☺️ (smiling face) is an older text symbol with a soft, shy feel, and some apps draw it in plain black and white.
