The hand emoji are the most literal group in the set β a gesture is a gesture β and also the most likely to mean something different across cultures. Almost all of them support the five skin-tone modifiers, and a few are joined sequences (the mixed-tone π«±π»βπ«²π½ handshake, for instance). Gestures that change meaning by place
- π is βperfectβ in most places, an insult in parts of southern Europe and South America, and was briefly co-opted by online trolls as a hate sign; context almost always makes the friendly reading clear.
- βοΈ shown palm-inward is rude in the UK, Australia and New Zealand; the emoji shows the palm outward.
- π€ is an ordinary Italian gesture that reads as impatience; it only becomes a compliment beside a kiss.
- π€ is the Hawaiian shaka, a greeting or βrelaxβ, as well as βcall meβ.
- π is a bow of thanks or apology in Japan, prayer or please elsewhere, and not a high five anywhere.

Do all hand emoji have skin tones?
Nearly all of them. The exceptions are a few symbolic hands such as π€³ selfie (which does have tones) β check the reference table on each guide; each tone is a separate two-code-point sequence.
